Author of the Well Gardened Mind, Rediscovering Nature in the Modern World, Sue Stuart- Smith is a keen gardener, psychiatrist and psychotherapist, and is married to celebrated garden designer, Tom Stuart-Smith, with whom she has been creating the wonderful Barn Garden in Hertfordshire for 30 years.

I was very excited to chat with Sue about her book, now a Times Bestseller, which explores the relationship between gardening and mental health and is, obviously, right up my street.

Our conversation touches on so many of the aspects of gardens and wellbeing that I’m passionate about; the ways in which our gardens support us, the concept of Garden Time in which time spent in the garden takes on a quality all its own and the seasons really matter, the possibilities for rehabilitation as exemplified by the wonderful Arnap garden in Sweden she describes and Microclial cells, the incredible cells in our brains which are known as the gardeners of the mind for their ability to prune away dead, un-needed matter and keep things at optimum functioning.

We started with Sue reading from her chapter called Garden Time…
